FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

Happy 2008! So far, winter has been kind to us. A flurry here and there, with temperatures rarely dipping below 20. Perfect running weather. For those of you looking for a good winter race, the Bucks County Road Runners still have 3 races left of their Winter Series up at Tyler State Park in Newtown.

There is also one more Shiver By The River 10K/5K in Reading on February 3. Following that, the Pagoda Pacers will have their annual Ugly Mudder 7 mile trail race at Mount Penn in Reading. February 15 is the 8th annual Frostbite 5 miler at Matttison Elementary School in Ambler. And finally, the Bux-Mont Running Club will hold its first 10 mile race in Quakertown. That’s a pretty full schedule for the wintertime.

The winter also bring new shoe styles. Nike has updated the Zoom Elite and Structure Triax. Asics has a new DS Trainer, while Mizuno has refined the Wave Creation and Nirvana. We just got in the Saucony Hurricane 10 and Ignition, a nice inexpensive running shoe for those who are looking to get into the sport without spending a lot of money. Brooks is introducing a shoe called the Infinity, which is designed for those runners who just need moderate stability but who would also like a highly cushioned, plush ride. Come in and try out some of the new models.

Starting this month, spring clothing will arrive. Therefore, all 2007 winter clothing will be 20% off of the marked price. Come in and get some great deals.

For some, winter has us traveling south and southwest for marathons. This year, the Disney World Marathon and the PF Chang’s Phoenix Marathon were held on the same day. Quite a few brave souls did the Goofy Challenge at Disney, where you run the ½ marathon on Saturday and the full on Sunday. I saw the medal; it seemed worth it. As for me, I ran/walked the marathon. I had been having back and hamstring issues prior to the race, but figured I was signed up so what the heck. Though my hamstring tore within the first mile, I slogged my way through the marathon, stopping all along the way to have my picture taken with the many Disney characters along the route. The highlight was the pirate ship with a Johnny Depp imitator in the Magic Kingdom. It wasn’t pretty, but the medal made everything worth it. Next up are the Gasparilla Marathon in Tampa and the A1A Marathon in Fort Lauderdale. What a great excuse for a vacation.

Some of you have asked and yes, the plan is to hold the 3rd Annual Black Sheep Run on Sunday, April 6 on the Perkiomen Trail in Oaks. As usual, only those with a baby jogger, a dog or wearing headphones are allowed to compete. In addition, there will also be a one mile kids fun run. A good time will be had by all.Click here for the application from.

Finally, spring track is quickly approaching. Remember, Born To Run always offers a 10% discount on all merchandise to CYO, Ambler Olympic Club, middle school and high school runners. Track spikes will start arriving within the next two weeks.

Stay warm and stay injury-free, but most importantly, have fun.
